On Stutters & Second Chances

I fell in love with God because He was different, but in a good way. The parts of me that were unlovable, He loved. The parts of me I questioned, He affirmed. When I feel unqualified, He tells me He qualifies those He called.

Exodus 4 offers a dialogue between a seeking God and a very hesitant and inarticulate man. This man, after being given countless practical signs and logical reasoning still refused the living God not just once, but twice.

Who can blame him? A man slow of speech and tongue tasked to speak the Word of the one true living God and ask Egypt’s Pharaoh to release his long-term slaves? I know I’d run away!

But God was firm. He knows whom He called and why He called him. He states in Exodus 4:11 (ESV):

11 Then the Lord said to him, “Who has made man’s mouth? Who makes him mute, or deaf, or seeing, or blind? Is it not I, the Lord? 12 Now therefore go, and I will be with your mouth and teach you what you shall speak.”

Not only did God remind this unqualified man that his impossibilities are simply possibilities with God, but He also affirmed that there is a personal and relational aspect to the task– God will be with him. Come to think of it, maybe sometimes, we try to limit God just because we cannot comprehend what He’s trying to do and how He’s trying to do it. Today, Moses’ encounter with God has been accounted in the Bible and stands as a testimony of the power and the might of God through an unqualified person. Imagine if God opted to do the task Himself. How, then, can we get the message that it is not by our own works nor qualifications, but by God’s grace alone? It is all about God, anyways. Isn’t it?

For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God

Ephesians 2:8 (ESV)

Or sometimes, we put God in a box because we expect Him to honor us. I think it should be the other way around; we are to honor Him. And sometimes, a part of honoring God means taking that leap of faith when He tells us to jump. And no, it’s not always comfortable. But it’s necessary, especially if it’s God calling for it.

I fell in love with God because at one point in my life, I was that very hesitant and inarticulate man; I was once like Moses. I fell in love with Him even more because He saw me, not just as who I was, but also as who I could be.
