How To Overcome Greed

I’ve been a freelancer for some time now and I used to just work and work and work. Around two years into the scene, God had led me to spend most of my time doing volunteer work and render service without pay instead. It was in ministry and it had nothing to do with my profession. At the back of my mind, I should be building my career, earning 6 digits a month. Yet, God had led me to view myself from His perspective– I was making money as an idol. Almost everything was conditional for me; I wasn’t genuinely serving. I embraced greed and even hoarded wealth across time.

Don’t get me wrong. Money is important. I know that some people are poor because of how they view money. Money, in itself, is not bad. It is neutral, yet what we do with money is an amplifier of our moral and ethical standards and beliefs.

Little did I know, I was borderline being greedy already. God had to displace me from my comfort zone of earning a lot to being in complete surrender and dependence on Him to meet my daily needs. During those times of refinement, God did not promise to bless me with much or beyond. But, He did promise me that He would be on time every time, as I follow Him. He promised me that He is and would be enough for me every time. And He made good on those promises.

Being greedy is saying that God is not enough.

James 4:2-3 (ESV)

“You desire and do not have, so you murder. You covet and cannot obtain, so you fight and quarrel. You do not have, because you do not ask. You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions.”

Maybe you’ve been coveting, asking God for something. I will not assume that I know why you don’t have it (yet). But, one thing is certain– God has a resolution.

I’ve been asking God for more– more wealth, etc. It is clear to me now that beyond just what I have, God was and is building what is in me first. Sometimes, the victory must first be won in us before we can experience it around us.

1 Corinthians 10:23 (ESV)

“All things are lawful,” but not all things are helpful. “All things are lawful,” but not all things build up.

Greed is an issue of the heart. What currently “satisfies” you? Would you finally lay everything down at the cross? And would you finally allow God to fill your every need today?
