“will you accept a broken kind of love?”

Buildings and stop signs
Some good pictures,
Some tunes that rhyme
After a few laughs
And some good food
You somehow managed to ruin the mood
— by joking way too carelessly
Stop me if I’m taking it way too seriously,
But are you really just playing me?

Some posts and flexes
Here we go again
— that after you show your love for me
A disclaimer is what I dare not hear

Are we in this for the long haul?
Or am I just delaying another heartache?

I ask God for a break
— to not take the bait
— to not rush any decision I’ve yet to make

“Danielle, will you accept a broken kind of love?”

There it was
— a voice, spoken ever so gently
All rules bent ever so legally
Suddenly, even the wrong things have a purpose
What shouldn’t have been said
— has led God to propose
— that He can turn all things around for my good

To respond in the way that I should
In order to represent Him well, if I could
To stretch my capacity to love
And to show both mercy and grace
Love is not a weighing scale
— nor is it a race
— of who gets to end it first
I’m so used to saying the final word

But maybe
— just maybe,
I can do life with you

Not to make a home in the dysfunction
I’d still manage to question
— the things you mindlessly mention

But maybe
— just maybe,
I can do life with you

“Danielle, will you accept a broken kind of love?”

Lord, only You know
— that slowly, but surely
I’ll let You mold me

I’m Yours
