Realizations From A Doctor’s Appointment

I’ve had a couple of doctor’s appointments in the last few years. But, what makes this one any different?

As most of you know, I’ve moved to a different city– different scenery, different environment. Yet, the closest to me are still the same. And even though I’ve physically left them behind, they still are kept nearest my heart– I still keep them close.

My last doctor’s appointment is different because I saw how my life is not just about me. My life is first about God and it’s about people. I am not always well. But, during the days that I am, I’ve always had the heart for service.

The last doctor’s appointment sparked something in me. And for those struggling to perceive purpose in their lives amidst plenty of problems or ailments, I hope I can impart a thing or two:

1. Your life is not just about you

I don’t know about you, but I can testify that each and every one of us has been graced on this earth differently to serve the people around us. You see, I was brought up by capable people. I was trained to have an independent mindset– to be capable. Yet, the reality is this– that those who are capable will not always be. I see that amongst the people around me. I see how I am needed. They may not always ask or show that they do need me, but the longing is felt.

I know it is the same with you. We are all not perfect, but each and everyone of us serves a certain role in this world.  We all have a function to fill. We all have purpose.

This doctor’s appointment showed me how I can give voice to the voiceless– to finally be able to take care of those who always take care of others. It showed me how I can be God’s hands and feet on earth and show that one does not have to walk and grow old alone.

As I went to the doctor’s appointment, it showed me that the visit is not just an investment to myself, but to the world around me. I am needed by people. And that will continually be my ‘why’.

    2. Carrying your cross is also a ministry

There’s so much more to life than your current situation. And what God has accomplished and will accomplish in you will bring people closer to Him through you. You have to understand that even the things we don’t like– even our imperfections, self-induced or not, have their own way of speaking about God’s glory. That is if we let Him.

It was about 2 years ago when God told me that I have to carry my cross on an ailment. And as much as I would want to go to God and plead every time, I’ve just learned to accept that some cross must be carried. And this is mine to carry.

But, you see, carrying one’s cross is not just about learning to accept things you cannot change or things God refuses to take away. Carrying one’s cross requires action– to cope or to manage in accordance to God’s perfect will. Carrying one’s cross is still about testifying about God. And being a good steward of our imperfections brings Him glory.

The doctor’s appointment went on for around 30 minutes. The check-up was made, as I heard the doctor’s genuine concern about my health. As I heard her also speak of others, then, it hit me. This life is not meant to be lived only for my own.

Just the same, at times when God does not choose to heal, He remains faithful. To bring about His good, pleasing, perfect will and to fulfill His purposes in my life and in theirs.

I will live for You, Jesus.
